About This Project
Aura Construction were commissioned to install a new VRF unit comprising of 13no. condensers on the fifth level roof of the Captain and Crew Airside Area of the Airport as part of a larger plan of works at Gatwick.
The works included supply and fit of new units and ductwork across an area of 1,125m2 , the removal of 6no. VAV duct units, installation of 6no. new motorised fire dampers and panel and supply and install of new water drinking fountain.
The original brief was to install 1no. condenser and 3no. fan coil units at ground floor level, however due to the nature of the building the brief was expanded to include a further 10, these were subsequently moved to the roof. This created a logistical problem as the use of cranes is prohibited due to aircraft flight and landing paths. The 13 new condensers, supplied by Mitsubishi, had to be assembled on the roof.
Overcoming this problem was a small part of the task, amongst many of the variations that arose from this project was the necessity to redesign the site ductwork and resolve issues around changeable raised ceiling heights throughout the site.
The works were completed within the 5 week timescale in spite of these variations and the building was handed over to the client.
